About 23% of candidates contesting West Bengal's (an eastern Indian state) upcoming two-phase assembly elections have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms, an Indian electoral watchdog. The group examined self-sworn affidavits from 2,920 candidates and identified 683 who disclosed pending or past criminal proceedings. Voting is scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with results expected on May 4.
