Indian authorities have seized 481 units of fake rabies vaccine from a firm in Bhagirath Palace (a major pharmaceutical wholesale market in Delhi's historic Chandni Chowk district), the Delhi government announced on Tuesday. The Drugs Control Department raided three premises and confirmed with the manufacturer, Human Biologicals Institute in Telangana, that the batch was counterfeit and had never been officially released. The seizure is significant because rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, and the discovery of fraudulent vaccines in circulation prompted coordinated raids in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where the fake stock had been sourced.
