Six Flags Magic Mountain in California has announced it will permanently retire its X2 rollercoaster, closed since July, after more than 100 riders alleged brain injuries and lawsuits and media reports raised safety concerns. The park said the ride had passed safety tests but that closing it was "the right thing to do" because guest confidence had been affected; a law firm suing the park said about 400 people had contacted it with injury claims. Lawyers for injured riders and for the family of Christopher Hawley, a 22-year-old who died after riding X2 in 2022, said the move came too late and called for stronger government oversight of amusement rides.
