Pakistan's Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) party has announced a nationwide highway blockade and sit-ins for August 7, targeting roads connecting districts across the country as part of a campaign against rising fuel costs and inflation. JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said only ambulances would be allowed through, and that 20,000 corner meetings would be held beforehand to build public support. The protest follows the government's introduction of a petroleum and carbon levy in June 2025, imposed under commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which JI argues has driven petrol prices above Rs200 per litre and placed an unfair burden on ordinary citizens.
