Pakistan's Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a detailed written judgment confirming death sentences for two men convicted of gang-raping a woman on the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway in September 2020, ruling that prosecutors proved their guilt beyond reasonable doubt through medical, forensic and DNA evidence. The convicts, Abid Ali and Shafqat Ali, had attacked a Pakistani-origin French woman who was stranded with her children after her car ran out of fuel, robbing her and subjecting her to sexual assault before fleeing. The court, which had dismissed the pair's appeals in June, stated that their conduct showed "complete disregard for human dignity" and that leniency would undermine public confidence in the justice system — a case that caused widespread outrage across Pakistan when it first emerged.
