Manchester City have signed Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea in a deal that equals the British transfer record, with the fee reported at £125 million (approximately 145 million euros). The move, completed on the final day of the European summer transfer window, matches the sum Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Swedish striker Alexander Isak last summer. At 25 years old, Fernández becomes one of the most expensive players in football history and the fifth Premier League signing this summer to surpass the £100 million mark.
The deal stretched to the final minutes before the 22:00 GMT deadline, with uncertainty lingering even as the clock wound down. Earlier in the day, Fernández had posted a heartfelt farewell to Chelsea fans on Instagram, writing that "these have not been easy days" and that Stamford Bridge had become "home" for him and his family. His departure comes amid a troubled final period at the London club: he had been publicly linked with a move to Real Madrid, was dropped from the squad as a result, and was booed by Chelsea supporters during a substitute appearance against Fulham just days before the transfer. His agent, former footballer Javier Pastore, had also publicly criticised Chelsea for refusing to renegotiate the nine-year contract Fernández signed when he joined from Benfica for £106 million in 2023.
At City, Fernández reunites with manager Enzo Maresca, the Italian coach who worked with him at Chelsea — and under whom Fernández enjoyed his best form, contributing 15 goals in an advanced midfield role. Maresca was a key driver behind the signing, which addresses a significant rebuild in City's engine room following the departures of Rodri to Barcelona, Bernardo Silva, Nico González, and Tijjani Reijnders. Fernández is expected to form a new-look central midfield alongside England international Elliot Anderson and Moroccan teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, with the trio costing City more than £300 million combined.
Fernández's pedigree is substantial. He broke through at River Plate in Buenos Aires before moving to Benfica in Lisbon, and has earned 49 caps for Argentina, with whom he won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and reached the 2026 World Cup final — scoring a memorable goal against England in the semifinal, before receiving a red card in the final as Argentina lost 1–0. At Chelsea, he won the UEFA Conference League and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, appearing 170 times in three seasons.
