Benin's Constitutional Court has officially confirmed Romuald Wadagni, the country's outgoing finance minister, as winner of the April 12 presidential election, clearing the way for him to be inaugurated on 24 May. The court found no irregularities in the vote, which gave Wadagni roughly 94 percent of ballots cast — a result widely seen as a foregone conclusion, as the main opposition party, The Democrats, was barred from standing due to a sponsorship requirement it could not meet. Wadagni, hand-picked by departing president Patrice Talon, is expected to maintain his predecessor's economic agenda but will inherit significant challenges, including deep inequality and jihadist-linked violence along Benin's northern border.
