Mexico's government has abandoned a proposal to cut the school year short by more than a month in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host alongside the United States and Canada from 11 June to 19 July. Education minister Mario Delgado had announced on 7 May that an anticipated heatwave and the tournament's traffic demands justified ending classes on 5 June, but the plan was reversed after a fierce backlash from parents and the National Union of Parents, who called the World Cup justification 'inexcusable.' Schools will now close on 15 July as originally scheduled.
