Fourteen Belgian cyclists were involved in a serious accident on the Zeelandbrug (a long road bridge spanning the Oosterschelde estuary in the southwestern Netherlands) last Sunday, after the lead rider struck a rope lying across the cycle path, suffering deep cuts to his arm and neck. The rope then caught on his helmet, and when a passing van struck it, the cord snapped back under tension, inflicting further severe lacerations on several other riders — five people were hospitalised in total. Dutch police are investigating the incident, including whether the rope may have belonged to a large kite, and are appealing for witnesses, as well as for the van driver to come forward.
