A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has been charged with making false statements about a shooting involving a Venezuelan man during a major immigration operation in Minnesota. The agent, identified as Castro, faces additional state-level charges of assault and false reporting related to the incident, in which Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis was shot in the leg and survived. Castro was among thousands of federal officers deployed to the state as part of Operation Metro Surge — a large-scale immigration enforcement campaign that drew widespread protests and saw two US citizens killed during confrontations with agents. Surveillance footage contradicted the agents' account of events, prompting a federal investigation; ICE placed two agents on administrative leave in February after acknowledging they may have made "untruthful statements." Charges against the two Venezuelan men originally accused of assaulting federal officers were subsequently dismissed, with prosecutors citing newly discovered evidence.
