A Singapore district court has convicted Achraf Arjaouy, a 31-year-old Italian national, of human trafficking after finding he posed as a wealthy Qatari pilot on dating app Tinder to lure a Singaporean woman into providing sexual services in Dubai (a major commercial hub in the United Arab Emirates). Arjaouy deceived the victim into believing she needed to earn US$10,000 to enter Qatar and marry him, collecting her earnings daily until she contracted a sexually transmitted disease and returned to Singapore in late 2021. The judge rejected defence arguments that challenged the victim's credibility based on behavioural stereotypes and her physical appearance, calling such reasoning "thoroughly outdated and unreliable"; Arjaouy faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to S$100,000, and caning when he is sentenced in July.
