European Parliament lawmakers have warned Albania that its bid to join the EU is in jeopardy unless the government abandons plans for a €1.4bn luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law. The project, which involves developing environmentally protected coastline in southern Albania — including Sazan island and the Zvërnec peninsula — has triggered weeks of mass street protests dubbed the "flamingo revolution" and calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama's resignation. Tineke Strik, the Dutch MEP leading a parliamentary fact-finding mission to the country, said Rama was "playing with fire," warning that continued construction in protected zones would directly undermine Albania's EU negotiations, particularly on environmental compliance benchmarks, and urged the European Commission to press Tirana to change course.
