A Belgian court has sentenced Paolo F., 30, to 27 years in prison for driving into a crowd of carnival revellers in Strépy-Bracquegnies (a village in the French-speaking Wallonia region of Belgium) in March 2022, killing seven people and injuring dozens more. At the time of the crash, he was travelling at 174 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, had illegally modified his car for greater speed, and was filming himself with a phone in his hand. The court described his actions as reflecting "utter contempt for human life" and said the car had been used "as a weapon," with witnesses recounting scenes "like a war zone."
