Infrastructure manager ProRail has announced that repair works on a section of the Netherlands' high-speed rail line (HSL) will take significantly longer than previously anticipated, now stretching into 2028 and 2029. The segment between Hoofddorp and Rotterdam will be closed for roughly three and a half months in 2028 for viaduct repairs near Rijpwetering, followed by a further 50 days out of service in 2029 — well beyond the 82 days originally estimated, after investigations revealed that foundations and abutments also require modification. The delays matter because construction faults at ten viaducts have already forced trains to travel at just 120 km/h instead of the line's 300 km/h design speed, disrupting international services between Amsterdam and Rotterdam; ProRail does not expect full-speed operations to resume across all viaducts until 2031.
