The UN Security Council voted on Tuesday to extend the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force in Haiti until March 31, 2027, with China, Russia and Pakistan abstaining over doubts about its effectiveness. The force, which replaced a Kenyan-led police mission that ended in April after staffing and funding shortfalls, has about 1,500 troops on the ground, roughly 30 percent of its intended strength. Gangs control much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and have displaced more than 1.5 million people, while Haiti, which has not held national elections in almost a decade, says more security help is needed before it can hold a vote.
