Cyprus is upgrading key military installations with financial support from the United States to strengthen its role as an evacuation hub and humanitarian aid corridor in the eastern Mediterranean. The Evangelos Florakis naval base (Cyprus's primary naval facility, located just 229 kilometres from Lebanon's coast) will receive a new heliport funded by US European Command, designed to accommodate large Chinook-type transport helicopters capable of airlifting civilians from conflict zones in the region. The investment reflects Cyprus's growing strategic importance amid ongoing instability across West Asia.
