Anthony Kazmierczak, a 56-year-old Minneapolis man, was sentenced Thursday to 14 months in prison for spraying a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar at Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall meeting in January. US District Judge Joan N. Ericksen also imposed three years of supervised release, which includes a no-contact order with Omar. US marshals escorted Kazmierczak from the courtroom immediately after the sentence was handed down.
The assault took place on 27 January at a Minneapolis town hall, at a moment when Omar was delivering a speech critical of US immigration enforcement. Witnesses saw Kazmierczak rise from the audience, approach Omar, and spray liquid at her from a syringe, shouting that she was "splitting Minnesota apart." Her security officers tackled him and handed him over to police. Omar was not physically injured — the liquid landed mainly on her clothing — and she resumed the town hall shortly after the incident. He later pleaded guilty to assaulting a US officer.
Judge Ericksen rejected any suggestion that the attack was impulsive. "This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment act," she said, noting that Kazmierczak had obtained tickets to the event weeks in advance. Prosecutors also presented evidence that he had texted at least three people hinting he planned to do something at the meeting, arranged for a neighbour to care for his dog, and sought information about bail bond companies — all before attending. "An attack on a public figure is not a political statement. It is misguided, selfish, and inconsistent with any concept of a free or democratic society," the judge said.
Kazmierczak, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, shook visibly during sentencing and spoke barely above a whisper. His attorney argued that he had not been taking mental health medications at the time of the attack, which lowered his inhibitions. Kazmierczak himself struggled to explain his actions, telling the judge at an earlier hearing that his memory of the incident was "fuzzy." He offered an apology in court: "I really apologize to her for having put her through that."
The attack occurred against a charged backdrop. The Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, a major metropolitan region in the upper Midwest, was in the grip of an aggressive federal immigration enforcement campaign that had triggered street protests, arrests, and the deaths of two US citizens in separate incidents involving federal officers. Omar, a Somali-born refugee who represents Minnesota in Congress and is a prominent voice on the left wing of the Democratic Party, has repeatedly been a target of hostile rhetoric, including statements from President Donald Trump, who in 2019 told her to "go back" to her country of birth and has since referred to her as "garbage." Kazmierczak's own social media posts showed support for Trump and described Democrats as "angry and liars."
