Armed anglophone separatist fighters attacked the village of Koumengba, near Bangourain in Cameroon's francophone West Region, in the early hours of Sunday 10 May, killing one person and abducting thirteen others whose whereabouts remain unknown. According to witnesses, the heavily armed assailants crossed Lake Bamendji from the neighbouring anglophone Northwest Region and travelled some ten kilometres into francophone territory before storming the village, firing into the air and breaking into homes. The attack highlights the spillover of Cameroon's long-running anglophone insurgency — a conflict rooted in grievances held by the country's English-speaking minority — beyond its original geographic boundaries, and more than 48 hours after the incident neither local nor national authorities had issued any official statement.
