Hundreds of ex-combatants in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region have been registering in the capital, Mekelle, for a programme to return to civilian life, just two weeks after federal forces retook the city from Tigray rebels. The scheme stems from the 2022 Pretoria peace deal, which ended a two-year civil war but has been undermined by renewed fighting last month. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has named a caretaker administration pledging to restore services, return displaced people and hold elections within six months.
