The United Nations has warned that Sudan's civil war (now in its fourth year, pitting the national army against the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group) is threatening to deprive an entire generation of children of their education, with more than 8 million school-age children currently out of the classroom. Nearly three-quarters of schools in the Darfur region have been damaged, destroyed, or rendered unusable since fighting erupted in April 2023, and over 67 attacks on schools have been documented since 2024. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, speaking at an informal Security Council session, noted that more than half of Sudan's teachers have gone unpaid and that roughly 33 million people — more than half of them children — are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
