An Albanian court has ordered the detention of Julide Yazici, a Turkish activist wanted by Ankara to serve a prison sentence for allegedly aiding a terrorist organisation — charges she says stem from her political activities. Yazici, who holds political asylum in France and works as a schoolteacher there, was arrested on 4 August at Tirana Airport while travelling from France to visit relatives in Albania; a judge rejected her lawyer's request for house arrest despite her asylum status. Turkey's extradition request relates to her participation in the 2013 Gezi Park protests (mass demonstrations in Istanbul against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government) and her support for the HDP, a pro-Kurdish left-wing party, and the case has drawn concern as Albania has previously deported other Turkish nationals to satisfy Ankara's demands.
