Ghana has formally brought the issue of xenophobic violence in South Africa to the African Union (AU), calling for urgent measures including a fact-finding mission to examine the root causes of the attacks. Since late March 2026, a wave of violence targeting African migrants has left at least seven people dead, with footage of the attacks circulating widely on social media; Ghana's foreign minister, who summoned South Africa's acting high commissioner over the matter, described the recurring incidents as a violation of the AU's Human Rights Charter and contrary to the spirit of African solidarity. Several other African nations have also raised alarm, with Nigeria — which has received over 130 repatriation requests from its citizens — summoning South Africa's ambassador, while Lesotho and Malawi have set up emergency helplines; Ghana is pushing for the issue to be placed on the agenda of the next AU summit, scheduled for 24–27 June in Egypt.
