Researchers specialising in interface design and human-computer interaction have identified five practical changes that could reduce the addictive nature of social media platforms. The proposal follows a landmark US court ruling in which a jury found that Meta and Google deliberately engineered their platforms to hook users, causing measurable harm to young people. The suggested design changes aim to strip out features — such as infinite scroll and algorithmically amplified content — that exploit psychological vulnerabilities and make it difficult for users to disengage.
