The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Uganda free of Ebola after the country completed the mandatory 42-day period with no new recorded transmissions. Uganda reported a total of 20 infections and two deaths during the outbreak, with its last confirmed case on June 21; the WHO made the announcement jointly with Uganda's Ministry of Health on Tuesday. The declaration is overshadowed by a worsening outbreak in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo, where confirmed cases have surpassed 5,656 and deaths exceeded 2,700, prompting Uganda to open additional treatment centres across the border and both countries to strengthen a bilateral health security agreement.
