Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz overcame a shaky opening set to defeat Portugal's Jaime Faria (world No. 72) in four sets — 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 — in two hours and 39 minutes at the US Open in New York. The Spanish second seed dropped the opening set before reeling off eight consecutive games to seize control of the match and ease through. Alcaraz, who last year became the first player to go through the entire tournament without dropping a set until the final, will next face China's Wu Yibing (world No. 113) in the third round on Friday.
