Three years after the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023, survivors of Kibbutz Nir Oz (a farming community about a mile from the Gaza border) are debating how to rebuild a place where roughly one in four residents was killed or kidnapped. Project director Emi Palmor says the site must be completely demolished and replanned, with residents split between erasing the scars and preserving some ruined homes as evidence; some families, like Dalit and Achi Ram Aharon, plan to return once it fully reopens in about two years. The question matters because the attack and Israel's failures that day remain unresolved, while the war it triggered has killed more than 74,000 people in Gaza and a ceasefire-based peace plan is stalled.
