Real Madrid bounced back from their previous La Liga defeat with a commanding 4-1 victory over city neighbours Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice to lift the club level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table.
Manager José Mourinho's side — who had lost to Real Betis in their last league outing — took control of the match early and ruthlessly punished their opponents' defensive errors. The opening goal came from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after Rayo defender Florian Lejeune clumsily fouled Álvaro Carreras; Mbappé stepped up and sent goalkeeper Emil Audero the wrong way. Lejeune then compounded his troubles by gifting the ball away under pressure from Vinícius Júnior, allowing Carreras to exchange passes with Mbappé before drilling home a second. Jude Bellingham, in fine early-season form, added a third before the break after Vinícius charged down the left and cut back for the England international. Real Madrid went into half-time with a comfortable three-goal cushion.
Rayo Vallecano, who sit 15th in the standings, showed more resolve after the interval. Sergio Camello, the Spanish forward who is joint-top scorer in the league alongside Mbappé and Barcelona's Raphinha, poked home in the 51st minute after Vinícius lost possession, and the visitors continued to threaten through Giorgi Tsitaishvili and Lejeune. Mourinho turned to Turkish midfielder Arda Güler to restore stability, and the substitute helped create Mbappé's second goal deep into stoppage time — the Frenchman finishing low and across goal to seal the result. It was Mbappé's seventh goal across all competitions this season.
The result moves Real Madrid to 12 points, level with leaders Barcelona, who travel to Levante on Sunday and can restore their advantage with a win. Rayo's coach Benat San José acknowledged the gap in quality while praising his players' second-half response.
