Barcelona produced a dominant display at Mestalla Stadium in Valencia on Sunday, thrashing the home side 5-0 to maintain a perfect start to the La Liga season and extend their lead at the top of the table. The result came on the same weekend that defending rivals Real Madrid fell to a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis on Friday evening, leaving Barcelona — the reigning champions and the only side in Spain's top flight to win all four of their opening fixtures — three points clear.
Lamine Yamal was the standout performer, scoring twice and causing Valencia's defence persistent problems throughout. The 19-year-old Spanish winger opened the scoring with a clever lofted finish in the sixth minute, had a second goal ruled out for offside following a VAR review, and then sealed the rout late on with his second of the afternoon. Fermín López added a crisp finish in the 22nd minute, before Raphinha — operating as centre-forward and now with six goals for the season — tapped home a third shortly after half-time. Pedri completed the scoring with a cool finish following a neat exchange with Dani Olmo, before Yamal's fifth goal rounded off a commanding afternoon for the Catalan club.
Barcelona were not without difficulties. Defender Eric García was forced off after a first-half collision, and the side remained without injured midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Rodri, the Spain international who joined this summer from Manchester City, made his first start and showed glimpses of his quality before being replaced. New signing Gabriel Jesus also made his debut as a late substitute, though he was unable to get on the scoresheet.
Atlético Madrid, another title contender, also dropped points this weekend, losing 3-0 away at Athletic Club in Bilbao, further underlining Barcelona's commanding position after just four rounds of matches.
The result matters beyond the title race: Barcelona face Dutch side Feyenoord in their opening Champions League group fixture at Camp Nou on Wednesday, and this performance will do little to settle Feyenoord's nerves ahead of that encounter. With momentum building and their nearest rivals stumbling, Hansi Flick's side look formidable early frontrunners in what promises to be a fiercely competitive season.
