Bangladesh's foreign ministry declared on Sunday that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not travel to India until New Delhi extradites former premier Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since fleeing a popular uprising that toppled her government in August 2024. Spokesperson A.K.M. Shahidul Karim said a "propitious environment" must first be created, citing Hasina's recent press conference in Delhi — at which she criticised Rahman's government — as having set back weeks of quiet diplomatic progress toward a bilateral visit. Dhaka also linked the visit to India handing over suspects accused of killing student leader Osman Hadi, who died in Singapore in December 2025 after being shot in Dhaka, with Bangladesh alleging the assailants fled to India.
