Mathieu van der Poel came agonisingly close to his first professional time trial victory at the Tour de Suisse (Switzerland's premier stage race), finishing just 0.31 seconds behind winner Tadej Pogačar over a 23.7-kilometre course in Aarburg. Van der Poel, riding for Alpecin-Premier Tech, led the standings for much of the afternoon before Pogačar, wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey, edged him out with a blistering finish. The result is nonetheless an encouraging sign for Van der Poel ahead of the Tour de France, after a difficult start to the week, and he was fined 500 Swiss francs for sitting shirtless in the finish-line hot seat.
