A woman in Puglia (a region in southern Italy) narrowly avoided losing a €1 million instant lottery prize after accidentally discarding the winning ticket, only for refuse workers to recover it following a day-long search through a garbage truck's contents. The winner had initially been told the ticket was "non-payable" at her local shop — because smaller retailers cannot redeem large jackpots — and threw it away before a family member alerted her that her regular numbers had in fact won. Waste management company SANB coordinated the search, which required specialist facilities due to hazardous materials in the waste, and the woman was asked to sign an agreement covering all additional costs incurred before the ticket was returned to her intact.
