Drug cartels in Mexico are deploying car bombs, explosives-laden drones and buried improvised devices with increasing frequency, raising alarm among security officials and organised crime experts. The most recent major incident saw 200 kilograms of explosives detonated outside a police station in Ojocaliente, in the north-central state of Zacatecas, injuring 11 people and damaging more than 60 homes; the state has recorded 23 such attacks so far this year, with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel both active in the region. The escalation risks further straining Mexico's already fraught relationship with the United States, where the Trump administration has designated several Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organisations and repeatedly threatened military action against them.
