The Democratic Republic of Congo's National Public Health Institute reports that confirmed Ebola cases have reached 7,672, with 3,699 deaths and a case fatality rate of 48.2 per cent. The outbreak, declared in May, has spread across 63 health zones in mostly eastern provinces and is now the largest and deadliest Ebola epidemic in the country's history and the second-largest ever recorded globally. Complicating the response is the fact that the Bundibugyo strain driving the outbreak has no licensed vaccine or proven treatment, while the affected region faces ongoing insecurity, large refugee populations, and high population mobility.
