Australian Mexican-themed fast food chain Guzman y Gomez (GyG) is shutting its US operations, closing eight restaurants in the Chicago area after failing to gain traction in a market dominated by established rivals such as Chipotle. Co-chief executive Steven Marks said the business could no longer justify further investment, citing poor sales momentum and far greater time and capital requirements than anticipated, with the exit expected to cost up to US$40 million. The withdrawal reinforces the United States' reputation as a "graveyard" for Australian fast food brands — previous casualties include Crust Pizza and Oporto — while GyG refocuses on its 237 Australian outlets and growing presence in Singapore and Japan.
