Yorgen Fenech, a 44-year-old Maltese property magnate, has gone on trial in Valletta charged with orchestrating the 2017 car-bomb assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, one of Malta's most prominent media figures. Prosecutors told the jury that Fenech paid hitmen €150,000 to carry out the killing, alleging he arranged the plot because Caruana Galizia was preparing to publish stories implicating him and his family. Fenech, the last of seven accused to face trial — five others have already been convicted — pleaded not guilty and faces a potential life sentence if found guilty of the murder charge.
