A US federal court in Virginia has sentenced Mohammad Sharifullah, 28, to 20 years in prison for providing material support to Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), the IS affiliate responsible for the suicide bombing at Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport on 26 August 2021. The attack, which occurred as US forces were conducting a frantic evacuation during America's military withdrawal from Afghanistan, killed 13 US service members and approximately 160 Afghans near an entry point known as Abbey Gate. Sharifullah, who prosecutors said scouted a route to the airport ahead of the attack, received the maximum sentence after a jury convicted him in April, though jurors deadlocked on whether he bore direct responsibility for the deaths themselves.
