Libya's National Institution for Human Rights (NIHRL) has raised urgent alarm over the arbitrary detention of 210 people — including women, elderly individuals, and children — in three prisons in eastern Libya controlled by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar (a military commander who holds sway over much of eastern and southern Libya). The detainees are held across Al-Kuweifiya, Abu Dizra, and Qarnada prisons, with members of the Sufi Muslim order (a traditionally moderate and mystical branch of Islam) reported to be suffering the worst abuses, including torture, solitary confinement, and denial of medical care — with some held for over two years without legal proceedings. The NIHRL's president has warned that these conditions may constitute crimes against humanity and said the institution has referred evidence to the International Criminal Court, threatening to escalate to further international mechanisms if Libyan justice fails to act.
