Around 300mm of rain fell on parts of Bangkok in roughly two days, flooding neighbourhoods across the Thai capital and leaving about 40 people dead, mostly from drowning or electrocution, according to the government. Authorities declared a flood disaster in all 50 city districts, housed thousands of people in more than 230 shelters, and saw flights and schools disrupted, with more heavy rain forecast for next week. Experts say Bangkok's canal-and-pump drainage system, built on the Chao Phraya River floodplain (the low-lying delta around Thailand's main river), has been weakened by concrete construction, while scientists warn extreme rainfall in South-east Asia is set to intensify with climate change.
