A group of five United Nations human rights experts has formally urged Canada to protect Sikh activist Moninder Singh, a Canadian national who has received four government-issued "duty to warn" notices since 2022 alerting him to credible and imminent threats on his life. In a letter dated 3 June and addressed to the Canadian government — with a copy sent to India — the experts said the threats appeared to form part of "a broader pattern of transnational repression by Indian authorities against Sikh activists" and called on Ottawa to accelerate investigations, hold perpetrators accountable, and protect similarly threatened individuals on Canadian soil. The case echoes the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a friend of Singh's who was shot dead near his Sikh temple in a Vancouver suburb and whose assassination Canadian authorities attributed to Indian agents — an allegation India denies — making Singh's situation a further flashpoint in the strained relationship between the two countries.
