Peru conducted its second national multi-hazard drill of 2026 on Friday, testing evacuation protocols for a simulated magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the central coast of Lima and Callao (Peru's main port city). At 3 p.m. local time, sirens and mobile alerts prompted thousands of citizens to evacuate homes, schools, and workplaces, with President Keiko Fujimori leading the exercise from Lima's Plaza de Armas; officials estimate a real quake of that scale would kill over 8,000 people and injure nearly 140,000 in the capital alone. The drill was timed to mark 19 years since Peru's deadliest recent earthquake — a magnitude 7.9 tremor that struck the southern Ica region on 15 August 2007 — and came just four days after a magnitude 7.4 quake in neighbouring Colombia left more than 265 people dead.
