French President Emmanuel Macron convened the Lumière Summit — named after the French brothers credited with inventing cinema — in the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, near Nice, urging international action to shield the film industry from the disruption caused by artificial intelligence and streaming platforms. Co-chaired by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, the gathering drew more than 200 guests from dozens of countries, including executives from Disney and Sony Pictures, as well as actor George Clooney, with both leaders warning that AI must not replace human creativity and announcing a joint €1 billion ($1.15 billion) fund to support independent filmmaking. Macron also launched a new organisation with a €30 million budget to back independent cinema, though the event was notably absent of major AI companies and platforms such as YouTube and Meta, whose refusal to attend was described by one media executive as "the elephant in the room."
