A widening wave of industrial action at German carrier Lufthansa is set to continue through the week, after cabin crew union UFO called on flight attendants to strike on Wednesday and Thursday, joining an ongoing two-day pilot walkout. The strikes are centred on Frankfurt and Munich airports, where hundreds of flights have already been cancelled and more than 50,000 passengers affected by cancellations and rebookings in Frankfurt alone. The disputes — now set to mark their fifth work stoppage this year — centre on demands for higher pay, better pension terms, and a social plan for Lufthansa subsidiary Cityline, which faces possible closure and the loss of around 800 jobs; the airline has dismissed the demands as unrealistic. The escalation carries particular symbolism as Wednesday also marks Lufthansa's 100th anniversary, with union members planning to demonstrate outside the carrier's Frankfurt headquarters during the centenary celebrations.
