At least two people, one of them a child, died and six were missing after a migrant dinghy deflated and sank off Tunisia near the Gulf of Gabes, the rescue group Sea-Watch said on Tuesday. Its ship Aurora found five survivors and two bodies on the dinghy, while 23 others reached the Hasdrubal gas platform about 100 km offshore; the survivors came from Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Pakistan and Nigeria, and the ship is bound for Lampedusa (an Italian island south of Sicily). The International Organization for Migration says 997 people have died crossing the central Mediterranean so far in 2026, even though arrivals are less than half of last year's level.
