Bangladesh has increased fuel prices by as much as 17.4%, effective 21 September 2026, as the government moves to offset mounting losses caused by surging global oil prices and elevated shipping costs tied to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Diesel now costs 135 taka per litre, up from 115 taka, with similar hikes applied to petrol, octane, and kerosene; the Energy Ministry said international fuel prices have more than doubled since March 2026, leaving state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation with losses of approximately $1.9 billion over six months. The increases are expected to drive up transport and production costs across the import-dependent economy, adding to inflationary pressures already weighing on households and the country's critical garment export sector, which has been battling an acute energy crunch.
