A shooting at a government-run high school in Tacloban City, in the central Philippines, killed three students and wounded five others on Monday morning, in one of the country's rare school shooting incidents. The attack took place at approximately 9 am inside San Jose National High School, located in the Barangay San Jose district of the city, which is the regional capital of Eastern Visayas on the island of Leyte. The five wounded students were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Two male suspects were taken into custody by police shortly after the shooting. One is a 15-year-old Grade 9 student at the school itself, while the other is described as an outsider with no direct affiliation to the institution. Both were reportedly armed with pistols. Their parents and guardians were summoned to Tacloban City Police Station 1, where the suspects were being held. Investigators have not yet established a motive, and police said they are still working to determine what sparked the attack at the school, which enrols more than 1,500 students.
Authorities appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
