A Pakistani nurse who ran into a burning nursery ward and rescued a single baby — the only survivor of a fire that killed 14 newborns — has described the moments she was unable to return for the rest. Razia Noreen, a staff nurse at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS, Islamabad's largest public hospital), entered the smoke-filled room at 6:38am on 26 August and emerged eight seconds later carrying an infant, but was beaten back by rapidly spreading flames and a sudden blackout before she could reach the other 15 babies. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif awarded Noreen 10 million Pakistani rupees and announced she will receive the Sitara-i-Khidmat (Star of Service) state honour, while a government inquiry found no evidence that frontline staff had abandoned the newborns — and noted that the fire's precise cause, whether the air-conditioning unit, an incubator, or an electrical fault, has yet to be conclusively established.
