Rayo Vallecano took a narrow but significant advantage in the UEFA Conference League semi-finals on Thursday, defeating French side Strasbourg 1-0 at their home ground in the working-class Madrid district of Vallecas. A second-half header from Alexandre Alemão, converting from a corner kick, proved to be the only goal of a closely contested match, leaving Strasbourg with a deficit to overturn when the two sides meet again at the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg next Thursday.
Both clubs arrived at this stage of the competition as relative newcomers to European football's latter rounds — it is Rayo's second European campaign and Strasbourg's fifteenth, yet neither side had previously reached a semi-final at this level. The first half was largely unremarkable, with both teams struggling to impose themselves. Rayo grew more energetic after the break, and Alemão's looping header eventually separated the sides. Strasbourg's Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders was sharp on several occasions, notably denying headers from Florian Lejeune, while the visitors found it difficult to locate their Dutch-Congolian striker Emmanuel Emegha. Repeated fouls disrupted the game's rhythm in the closing stages, and Rayo saw out the result without serious alarm.
In the other Conference League semi-final, England's Crystal Palace produced a commanding 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukrainian club currently playing their home matches in the Polish city of Kraków due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ismaïla Sarr opened the scoring after just 21 seconds — the fastest goal in the competition's history — before Shakhtar briefly levelled. Goals from Daichi Kamada and former FC Groningen forward Jørgen Strand Larsen sealed the result for Palace.
Strasbourg's hopes of reaching the Conference League final — scheduled for 27 May in the German city of Leipzig — remain alive, but they will need to find a winning formula at home next week. A one-goal deficit is manageable, though the French club will need to show significantly more attacking ambition than they displayed in Spain. Rayo, for their part, will look to protect their advantage while remaining a threat on the counter. The tie is still open, but the momentum firmly favours the Madrid side.
