Norway's Golar LNG has withdrawn its floating liquefaction vessel, the Hilli Episeyo, from Cameroonian waters this July after eight years of operation off the coastal city of Kribi, leaving the country with no means of producing or exporting liquefied natural gas. The vessel — which single-handedly extracted, liquefied, and loaded Cameroon's gas onto tankers — has been redeployed to Latin America, a move industry insiders say was foreseeable for at least two years but was not adequately addressed by the government. Economists warn the departure amounts to a fiscal catastrophe, as LNG revenues accounted for roughly half of the national hydrocarbons company's income, worth between 250 and 300 billion CFA francs (approximately $420–500 million) annually — funds that were already factored into Cameroon's 2026 budget but will now not materialise.
