The European Parliament voted by a large majority on Tuesday to strip Diana Soșoacă, leader of Romania's ultra-nationalist SOS Romania party, of her parliamentary immunity, clearing the way for criminal prosecution in her home country. Romanian prosecutors have been investigating her since September on 11 alleged offences, including four counts of unlawful deprivation of liberty related to the alleged detention of an Italian journalist in 2021, as well as the promotion of individuals convicted of genocide and war crimes and the dissemination of anti-Semitic content. The Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs determined the charges are criminal in nature and unrelated to her political activity, rejecting Soșoacă's claim that the case is politically motivated; she has denied all accusations and described the proceedings as evidence of a "Romanian and European dictatorship."
