Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called for zero tolerance against slash-and-burn land clearing, branding the practice "ecological terrorism" as fires on the island of Borneo (part of the vast Southeast Asian archipelago shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei) continue to burn out of control, having already destroyed more than 200,000 hectares between January and July 2026. Indonesian police have opened 219 criminal investigations linked to the fires and are probing 95 companies. However, environmental groups are dismissing the rhetoric as deflection: Walhi (Indonesia's largest environmental NGO) argues that the president's framing targets only the act of lighting fires while ignoring the role of large corporations operating under permissive state regulations, and that the government itself bears responsibility for recurring blazes in state-managed and corporate concession zones.
